Setting Goals for the New Year

January 2, 2018

I couldn't finish out today's blogs without sharing my thoughts about a message I heard yesterday at church.  Prayer. Prayer. Prayer!  How many of us use prayer only in desperation?  What about the habitual blessing or night time prayer where the words just roll off of our tongues without much thought?  Are we using God as our genie laying out all of our wishes and expecting Him to grant them?  Well after yesterday's message I was reminded that God just wants to hear from us, just like we talk to our parents or close friends.  We don't need fancy words or long prayers, either.  If you have a difficult time knowing where to start or maybe you have burdens that jumble your thoughts, there are 4 steps to prayer that may be helpful.

Psalms 5:3  "In the morning Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation."

1. Adoration / Praise-recognizing our wonderful mighty God for who He is.

2. Confession-humbling ourselves before Him and asking forgiveness for our sins.

3. Thanksgiving-remembering all that God has blessed us with and what He is doing in our lives.

4. Supplication / Intercession-recognizing and bringing forth to God your concerns for others, our community, families and our own burdens.

I know I have fallen short in my prayer life, as well as, my quiet time with Him.  So, this is as much for me.

With starting the new year and setting your goals, put prayer and quiet time at the top of your list.  Draw closer to Him in time of need, but also, celebrate with Him when all is well!  Intercede for others.  When you are having that bad day and someone crosses you, take a step back, take a breath and say a prayer for that person.   This will be a challenge for me, too, but I've found that moments when I have taken this approach, I am not stressed, but instead blessed.
